Facts About Horses

Wow! Look at these recordbreaking facts about horses...

Starting with:

The largest horse in history was born in Bedfordshire in 1846. He was a Shire horse named Sampson, later renamed Mammoth, and measured a staggering 21.2½ hands high at the shoulder.

That is 7 ft 2½ in or 2.20 m! His peak weight was estimated at over 1.5 tonnes - imagine feeding that for a week!

By contrast, the smallest horse in the world measures 14" and weighs 20lbs. The world's smallest horse breed is called a Falabella and originated in Argentina.

The oldest horse on record lived in the 19th Century and was an amazing 62 years old when he passed away. His was aptly named "Old Billy".

The smallest Olympian equine competitor was named Stroller. He won a silver medal with rider Marion Coakes in the 1968 Mexico Olympics - he lived to the grand old age of 36.

Stroller in fact was only a pony as he measured 14.2 hh. His triumph was even more spectacular because he was competing as a showjumper against horses almost double his size.
