Viewing A Horse For Sale Pitfalls To Avoid!
Always make an appointment in advance when arranging to view a horse for sale rather than just turning up unannounced.
It is good manners and will keep the process on a business-like footing.
Of course, if you make an appointment always turn up on time.
Owners have the right to refuse to show you the horse if they feel you are messing them around.
This is particularly relevant on busy yards where the owner may have numerous tasks to deal with.
Ask to view the horse in daylight and good weather conditions. Muddy legs can hide a multitude of sins (and that's just the current owners!)
It is just not possible unless there are excellent lighting facilities to examine a horse properly in the dark.
Avoid Buying on Impulse...How?
Take along a more experienced horsey friend or your instructor to look for defects or danger signs you may not be experienced enough to spot yourself. Take their advice when offered - it could save you thousands of pounds of mis-spent cash.
You are far less likely to buy on impulse when you are accompanied by someone who has your best interests at heart.
Wherever possible, when viewing a horse for sale arrange to see the animal in its current home. We would strongly advise against buying a horse from a Stock Sale or Horse Fair unless you are an experienced horse owner and even then proceed with extreme caution.
Do not under any circumstances arrange to meet an owner with the horse halfway at a layby or service station - yes - it still happens.
If someone knows you are keen on buying a horse they may offer to sell it to you before you've even seen it. Unscrupulous dealers may take advantage and offer to meet you at a specified location with the horse already on board. You can't take it back if it doesn't suit because you have absolutely no idea from whence it came.
Once you've made the appointment to view the horse - why not review the information you have obtained over the telephone. Do you have any more
questions to ask the seller
? If you think of anything else you want to ask the owner, jot it down so that you can take it with you.
