Follow Our Horse Security Checklist - DO IT NOW!

DO NOT GIVE A THIEF A BREAK!

  • DO take good quality colour photos of your horse from each side, face on and from the rear.

Make a note of any distinguishing features and notable Horse Markings that will help identify your horse in the event he is stolen or strays.

Keep these separate from the horse's passport and do not keep any documents relating to your horse on your yard. If the yard owner requires passports always give them a copy and keep the original somewhere safe.

  • DO keep your field and yard gates locked (never lock your stable doors when the horse is inside in case of fire)

  • DO padlock the hinge end of your gate as well as the opening, or reverse the metal plates that hold the gate on. This will make it harder for a thief to enter your field with a vehicle as the gate would not easily lift off the hinges

  • DON'T leave items of value such as saddles, bridles or that brand new rug lying around - make sure they are out of sight from would-be thieves

  • DO install rigid wire mesh on the inside of your tack room window to prevent would-be thieves smashing their way in

  • DO keep tack room keys out of sight and preferably on a separate keyring. (Leave them on your car keys and you could find your car gone as well)

  • DO mark your postcode (or phone number) in large letters on your rug with a permanent marker so it is clearly visible - this will act as an immediate deterrent to passers-by.

  • DON'T leave a headcollar on your horse in the field and don't leave lead-ropes lying around which would enable a stranger to catch your horse.

  • If possible, choose a livery yard with on-site accommodation so there is always someone around

  • DO take your tack home each time you use it if there is no lockable tack room on site.

  • DO remember to let other people know what security precautions they need to take if you ask anyone to look after your horse while you are on holiday.
