Is a Pre-Purchase Examination Necessary?
Without a doubt a Pre-Purchase Examination or "Vetting" is strongly recommended if you are considering buying the horse.
Arrange for an independant veterinary surgeon to conduct the examination.
Basic Vetting
A basic or 2 stage vetting costs around £80 and will cover an examination of the horse by a vet in the stable and observation of the horse's movement and action when walked up in hand.
Comprehensive Vetting
A 5 stage vetting is a more detailed inspection. The vet will monitor the horse's heart rate and respiration before and after strenous exercise and carry out a blood test. Some insurers insist upon a 5 stage Pre Purchase Examination if the value of the horse is above a certain amount.
A 5 stage vetting costs approximately £250 but represents only a fraction of the purchase price and will give you peace of mind that you are buying a healthy animal.
By contrast, if there are any serious health problems you will be fully informed and able to walk away from the deal.
You will get a written certificate from the Vet and will be able to use this when insuring your horse.
